The African Union has reiterated its support for the Republic of Kenya bid to secure the United Nations Security Council seat for 2021-2022.
In a letter dated 9th June (Tuesday) the permanent observation mission of the African Union to the United Nations urged its member states to support Nairobi bid.
“The Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations presents its compliments to all Permanent Missions to the United Nations and its request to the Chair (Botswana) has the honor to remind that the African Union endorsed the Republic of Kenya for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council term 2021-2022.”
Djibouti which lost to Kenya back in August last year in AU headquarters has challenged the validity of Kenya for vying arguing that Nairobi occupied the regional seat at UNSC twice before.
Kenya enjoyed two mandates in 1977-1978 and in 1997-1998, while Djibouti occupied the Security Council seat only once, in 1993-1994.
The 2020 United Nations Security Council election will be held on 17 June 2020 during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly
